Our times are ripe for deep transformations.
What kind of transformation?
That’s not entirely clear or determined.
You might hear people speak with certainty of the new age of technological development and progress more broadly or other people equally speak of the certain demise of humanity, our habitat and way of being. Both perspectives are right & wrong at the same time. The ability to hold this paradox of our times might be the most resilient approach to navigating our challenging times.
Let me elaborate a bit further. I am often finding myself in conversations with people about the state of our world and depending on their disposition, I find myself taking the opposite position (not on purpose) simply because I don’t neatly fit into any camp and I don’t think the outcome of our collective evolution is pre determined. For example if I am talking to a techno-optimist enthusiast that believes technology will solve all of our problems, I find myself naturally presenting the counter argument of how historically the gains of technology have been concentrated with the few elite and simply amplified the deeply embedded systemic oppressions of people, ecosystems and our collective psyche. While on the other hand, when I speak to doomsayers I find myself presenting the unparalleled opportunity our generation has to reshape & evolve the outdated axiomatic doctrines of our time. Re imagining deep axioms like how we view ourselves, our relationship to each other and the world as a whole.
I share this because I don’t feel our evolutionary transformation is inevitable within our current system, but neither do I think our demise is inevitable. This ambiguity is challenging for most of us but I think practising the ability to hold multiple truths is a crucial tenet of wisdom & intelligence and by holding these multiple truths I believe we can be wiser stewards of a healthy & flourishing planetary system.
Before I wrap up I would like to leave you with two images that have deeply resonated with me & served as a guiding metaphor for the phase shift our planet seems to be experiencing. The first is of a mother giving birth, to be more specific imagine the first ever mother to give birth without any prior knowledge of what is happening to their body or that they can survive the experience. On the surface the mother is going through nine months of an unprecedented transformation that is painful unfamiliar & potentially dangerous for all lives involved. In a deep sense it represents a departure from the status quo of the human body, but in a longer time frame of humanity it is a natural transformation of the human body, in order for life to continue flourishing.
Now for the second image, imagine a caterpillar going through metamorphosis with its Imaginal Cells building the structure that will eventually become a butterfly. You can imagine that within the caterpillar there is a deep shift, a disruption of regular activity & uncertainty of the future. In both these images exists a few key factors that I feel are essential to consider. First is that things cant continue as they are in order for a healthy transformation to take place, second is that there is a certain uncertainty of the outcome and thirdly if you can start imagining & embodying what the other side of the transformation can be, you can more effectively circumvent failure modes and orientate towards the most conducive direction for life to flourish.
